Abstract

This study was motivated by the low critical thinking skills of elementary school students in IPAS learning, due to teacher-centered instruction, which led students to be less active in discovering and understanding learning concepts independently. Therefore, a learning model that actively involves students and provides meaningful learning experiences is needed, such as the environment-based guided inquiry learning model. This study aimed to analyze the effect of an environment-based guided inquiry learning model on fourth-grade students’ critical thinking skills in IPAS subjects at SD IT Bunayya Pekanbaru. This research employed a quantitative, pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest. The research sample consisted of 30 students from class IV Abu Bakar selected using a purposive sampling technique. The research instruments used were multiple-choice test questions and observation sheets of students’ critical thinking skills. Before use, the instruments were tested for validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discrimination power. The data analysis techniques included the normality test, paired sample t-test, and effect size test. The results showed an increase in students’ average scores from 68.90 in the pretest to 83.13 in the posttest. The results of the paired sample t-test obtained a significance value of <0.001, indicating a significant effect of the environment-based guided inquiry learning model on students’ critical thinking skills. In addition, the effect size test result obtained a Cohen’s d value of 1.29, which was categorized as a large effect. Therefore, it can be concluded that the environment-based guided inquiry learning model is effective in improving students’ critical thinking skills in IPAS learning at the elementary school level.
