Abstract

This study aimed to improve the Indonesian vocabulary of children aged 5–6 years through a storytelling method using hand puppets and storybooks. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model and was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The participants were 10 children in Group B. Data were collected through observation, vocabulary assessment, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative approaches. The findings showed an improvement in children's vocabulary mastery in the Developing as Expected (BSH) and Developing Very Well (BSB) categories, increasing from 50% in the pre-cycle stage to 70% in Cycle I and 90% in Cycle II. This improvement was accompanied by increased attention and participation, greater confidence in responding to questions, improved ability to identify and repeat new vocabulary, and greater ability to use vocabulary in simple sentences and retell stories. Thus, the implementation of the storytelling method using hand puppets and storybooks contributed to the development of children's vocabulary within the context of classroom action research. These findings suggest that storytelling can serve as an interactive and contextual alternative for supporting language development in early childhood education.
